I am very active in our local mushroom club here in eastern Washington, the Spokane Mushroom Club ( http://www.spokanemushroomclub.org/ ) You listed the "wooly chanterelle", gomphus floccosus, as edible (perhaps with caution). New information that has been provided to us by mycologists indicates that while this particular species has been eaten in the past, it should now be listed as poisonous. Toxicologists, including Professor Michael Beug, who spoke at our annual conference this year, have discovered that it contains toxins that actively attack the liver. Prof Beug currently chairs the NAMA (North American Mycological Ass.) toxicology committee, so I have to trust what he tells me. I just thought I should share this information with you so you can pass it along to your readers. Greg Cozza Vice President elect 2005 Spokane Mushroom Club 17fed Scaly or Whooly Chanterelle (Gomphus floccosus or Cantharellus floccosus) Same as above 18fed Scaly or Whooly Chanterelle (Gomphus floccosus or Cantharellus floccosus) Same as above 12fp Big Laughing Gym, Big Laughing Mushroom, Giant Gymnopilus (Gymnopilus spectabilis) Arora says that it is inedible due to the bitter taste and does not class it as a poisonous one although other books do due to its hallucinogenic properties (contains psilocybin and/or psilocin compounds). It is completely orange-yellow with a cortina or veil remnant and has an odor of anise. It grows on and is attached to wood. |
