Hi Frank,

I think there are conflicting families here. Your Francois Nadeau was born in Sablonceaux, France (Charente region) in the St. André Parish; as opposed to Joseph-Osanny who was born in Genouillac, Angoulême (Charente region). Francois was born 19 october 1701. They had 6 children.

The christening act is at the following site: http://sgcf.com/archnot.php#notule50

I do not believe Joseph Osanny Nadeau had a son named Francois, but I could be wrong... There are many mistakes on Internet sites. This is one site I used for info on Joseph Osanny Nadeau:

Hoping this helps!

Rebonjour Francois,

La mienne est comme suit:

Mes saluts!

Hi Frank,

This message was addressed for Francois Nadeau who lives in Gatineau, Quebec.

Simply telling him that I have a daughter in Ottawa that just graduated from U. of Ottawa and enquiring about which line of Nadeau he hails from.

My line of Nadeau is as such:

J.O. Nadeau, Denis Nadeau, Jean-Baptiste Nadeau, Zacharie Nadeau, Zacharie Nadeau encore, Joseph Zacharie Nadeau, Gilbert Nadeau, Alfred Nadeau, Octave Nadeau and Albert Nadeau and then me...

And that there could be an Auguste Nadeau in this line, but more research needs to be done

Hi Suzette,

If you would give me more information on Peter Nadeau and his daughter Annie Nadeau, I could perhaps find something out. I live in St. John the Baptist diocese in Restigouche County.

There is a lot of McIntyre's in the are as well. Do you have the names of your grand-mother's children and her siblings, as well as the father of Peter Nadeau. Most Nadeau are related in this area and they came from across the Baie-des-Chaleurs in the Gaspé region, before that from Beaumont, Québec and before that from Ile d'Orléans, Québec. That at least is my line of Nadeau.

I remember a Peter Nadeau from this area, perhaps a brother to Gordon, Norman Nadeau. This Peter could be a grandson of your Peter who married in 1870. I will do some inquiries about this line of Nadeau.

Hi Nancy,

Marguerite Abraham had either 5 or 6 children from her marriage to Joseph Osanny Nadeau, my first ancestor.

If Marguerite would not have had children, a lot of us Nadeau would not be around. :o) She did marry a second time, because Joseph Osanny Nadeau died in his bed on his farm in St-Laurent, Ile d'Orleans, QC at 40 yrs of age. Marguerite marries Guillaume Chartier within a year, apparently she was in financial troubles and it is said that this marriage was possibly platonic. Guillaume Chartier ended his life at the Jésuites in Quebec (monastery). Marguerite died around 1694.

Her first child was Marie born in late 1666 or early 1667 cuz she was 4 months at the census of 1667. She died young.

Adrien Nadeau was also born but died in infancy.

Catherine Nadeau married Jean Roy in 1694, had 12 children Jean-Baptiste Nadeau was the first son to marry in 1689 to Anne Lacasse (Casse) in Beaumont, QC (6 boys, 6 girls) Denis Nadeau (my ancestor) was the youngest of t he boys and he married in 1695, he married the sister of Anne Lacasse, Charlotte Lacasse (Casse) in Beaumont, QC., had 13 children (6 girls, 7 boys)

I have come across the name of a child that could of been called: Francois Nadeau, however this needs verification.

My Nadeau ancestors (Zacharie Nadeau & Rebecca Allard) settled in Carleton, Quebec in the Baie-des-Chaleurs (where I presently live). Many generations stayed in the are of Carleton, Quebec until my grand-father Octave Nadeau moved across the Baie-des-Chaleurs to New Brunswick.

The research I want to do on Macias (Marc) Nadeau will be done in the archives in Angoulême, France if my travel plans take place this year. I want to visit this wonderful part of France, and drink wine where my ancestors once set foot. Of course, I also have to take the time to go to Iles d'Orleans at Ste-Famille, QC and visit the land where my ancestors settled in Canada. Hopefully I can do that this summer with my dad, he would be thrilled!

How are you related to the Nadeau family, if I may ask.

Thanks for your response!

Fran Ruddick

hello,

I have been researching the family of a very good friend of mine, Kathleen Phalen who is a decendent of Lillian Nedeau b.1868 in Iowa, parents Olizern (spelling?) Nadeau b. abt. 1832 in French Canada and Mary E. b. 1848 in New York. Olizern is last known to have lived in Richland, Greenfield County North Dakota but whose male decendents ended up in Campbell, Wilkin County Minnesota. Lillian Nedeau lived in Campbell, Wilkin County Minnesota most of her life.

It appears you've located many Nadeau's around the US and Canada. Do you know any in Minnesota who might be interested in corresponding with me or my friend Kathleen? She has had no prior knowledge about this branch of her family.

Hi Richard,

I think you are the one who helped me make my Nadeau connection a few years ago. You were a great help. My line is as follows: note the first last name is the father's last name and the second one is the mother's_ John Jameson Nadeau, son of Mavis Nadeau Harmon, dau of Wilford Nadeau Greene and Maude Myrtle Harmon Monteith, son of Frank E. Nadeau and Harriet Ethel Greene Little, son of Joseph Nadeau Talbot and Flavie Thibodeau, son of Joseph Nadeau Migneault and ?, son of Joseph Nadeau Dumont and ?, son of ? I lost some of my files a couple of years ago, and I don't remember the connection back to the origin, but I'm sure you have it. I do have some information to share on your website regarding my grandfather, Wilford and his grandfather Joseph, if you are interested.

Thanks, John

Bernadette Nadeau

Hello from yet another branch of the family! A quick search of the genealogy page did not yield my line. Here in my office I don't have all the details; I'll have to check at home. My grandfather was Louis Wilfred, also known as Wilfred Joseph, possibly born in 1885 and was married to Laura Martinbeault born in 1900. I believe his father's name was also Louis. Memere & Pepere both lived in Western Mass at the time of their marriage. Memere always claimed he was born in Canada; she also wanted us to believe she was born in France, but I'm pretty sure that was inaccurate.

Yes, I like many others, am trying to connect with my history. I am learning French and have visited Canada--it was pretty exciting to see my name plastered all over the place. It was a lot of fun to watch the look on people's faces when I gave my full name. On my next visit I hope to visit some of the genealogical sites around Quebec.

I loved the very personal nature of this site. Perhaps I can help fill out some of the details and you can help me fill the missing gaps. Right now I'm really curious about French Canadians on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where I am currently living. All I've been able to locate so far is information about a French transcontinental cable built from a location in Orleans--the only town out here with a french name. AND there are a number of people bearing the name "Nadeau"--the only place in Eastern Mass where I have encountered "the name".

Hello,

I'm not sure that this is where I'm supposed to send a query or not. I ran across a reference in your genealogy about "Denis III (of the union with second wife, Madeleine Doze) begat Margueritte" Denis was born Oct 19, 1754 (Quebec??)

Do you by any chance have additional information on Madeleine Doze? I would be very interested. Thank you very much.

I am new to this list and have been doing research for a few years but this family has me beaten. All I have is a bit from Wilfrid's granddaughter my mother in law

WE find

WILFRID G Nadeau wife Alice and son Wilfred G in the 1920 census for the United States both Wilfrid and wife are 42..he is born in Canada and Alice is born in Connecticut.

1930 census just shows Alice and daughter Helen J (born 1903) in Connecticut.

We know that WILFRID and his son came to Canada (date unknown) and homesteaded and lived in COLD LAKE ALBERTA. Applied for Homestead Nov. 14th 1928 where he states he is 51 yrs old.. He also ran the POST OFFICE in COLD LAKE from July 1922 to 1923 I have the homestead application and it doesn't really give any clues about the family.

I cannot find WILFRED on any other Census..there is also a daughter EVELYN and

WINNIFRED LENA..she was born July 15 1900 Salisbury Maryland and came to CANADA with he father and brother..and married Lester Warren SHAW

Does anyone have any ideas where I can look for information. As I am on Vancouver Island most of my research is restricted to the internet and helpful online people

Thank you for your time

Diane

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I have recently received the death certificate for WILFRED GIDEON NADEAU

>From the certificate I have found he was born October 28th 1876

Athabaskaville Quebec and his father is ROCQUE NADEAU. There is a bit of confusion on the certificate but I believe he married Alice SANDERSON sometime around 1896..they had 3 daughters and one son.

Son WILFRED GEORGE NADEAU was born Aug. 24th 1897 in Plainville, Hartford CT Connecticut. Daughter LENA WINNIFRED was born July 15th 1900 Harvington Connecticutt.

I have not found this family on any census records. I subscribe to Ancestry and Godfrey Library and found nothing

Can anyone help or suggest where I can research online for information..

Thank you

Diane

I'm puzzled by what additional information you are seeking beyond what has been given in previous replies regarding this family. You have the names of both his and her parents and their marriage locations. From there you can work backwards by renting the microfilms and studying parish marriage records. Forwards you can get a great deal from census records. For example, here they are in 1881:

Household:

Name Marital Status Gender Ethnic Origin Age Birthplace Occupation Religion

Maxime NADEAU M Male French 31 Q <Quebec> Cultivateur Catholique

Delia DESROSIERS M Female French 26 Q <Quebec> Catholique

Philias NADEAU Male French 6 Q <Quebec> Catholique

Joseph NADEAU Male French 4 Q <Quebec> Catholique

Marie Rose NADEAU Female French 2 Q <Quebec> Catholique

Emilia NADEAU Female French <1 Born: Sep; 8/12 Q <Quebec> Catholique

Census Place Ste-Aime, Richelieu, Quebec

Family History Library Film 1375838

NA Film Number C-13202

District 61

Sub-district F

Page Number 48

Household Number 223

In 1900 the widowed Delia is in Northridge, MA with all 11 of her surviving children (she says she had 12). Their birthdates are: (all born CAN except the grandchildren, all emigrated 1897)

Delia, Jan 1854

Felix, May 1875 (this would be Phileas with wife of 5 years and 3 children listed) Philip, Mar 1877(probably Joseph Philip) Clara, Jan 1879 (Marie Rose?) Amelia, Sept 1880 Omar, Feb 1882 Elise, Feb 1884 Edmund, Dec 1885 Lora, Dec 1886 Corinne, Jan 1890 Arthur, Jan 1892 Eugene, Feb 1894

->From this we learn that Maxime was alive no later than May 1893 if he

>fathered Eugene. There is every reason to believe the children were

Your problem is a misunderstanding of 'dit' names. I won't go into a long explanation here, but the surname in question is DEGUIRE dit DESROSIERS. It can be written also as DESROSIERS dit DEGUIRE, as DEGUIRE, or as DESROSIERS. It totally depended on the family and the priest. You will find the *same person* listed in any of those ways on different documents.. Once people crossed the border into USA they usually chose to go with the name easiest to spell or pronounce and often 'Americanized' the spelling.

First, or 'given' names have similar issues. A person was baptised with several names. Again, depending on the priest, the order of the names may change and the number of names given on a document may change. There are up to four 'parts' to a baptismal name for both men and women: the name of a saint (often one whose 'day' is the birthday of the child), the name the parents want as a 'first' name, a middle name, and a 'sponsor' or 'godparent' name. My mother is a good example.

Baptismal name: Marie Yvette Jeannette Juliette Gendron

Married as: Jeannette Yvette Gendron

If the person served in the military, the baptismal name is used regardless of the person's preference. Thus my uncle Joseph Georges Emile Gendron, previously known as Emile, became Joseph Gendron in the army. My aunt, Marie Marguerite Theresa Gendron, always known as Terry, became Marie Gendron in the navy.

So, much confusion in French-Canadian genealogy can be clarified with a good understanding of this process. A man named Philias may be Joseph Philias or Philias Joseph or (after crossing the border) Felix. Many women baptised as Marie dropped that name, changed it to Mary, or made it a middle name.

It would be very rare for any immigration information to exist for QC to USAin 1897. What may exist is a naturalization record for the husband, when you learn his name for sure.

I do believe this is the family you seek. Remember that census takers obtained information from whomever they encountered at the house. Often the ages were guesses. The most important clue is the child born in 1880 that matches well.

The 1900 census says this about the children (with 1881 info in parentheses):

1900 United States Federal Census > Massachusetts > Worcester > Northbridge > District 1663

Felix, b. May 1875 (Philias, abt 1875)

Philip, b. Mar 1877 (Joseph, abt 1877)

Clara, b. Jan 1879 (Marie Rose, abt 1879)

Amelia, b. Sept 1880 (Emelia, Sept 1880)

Omar, b. Feb 1882

Elise, b. Feb 1884

Edmund, b. Dec 1885

Lora, b. Dec 1886

Corrine, b. Jan 1890

Arthur, b. Jan 1892

Eugene, b. Feb 1894

It also says mom had 12 children and 11 are living. All of the children were born in Canada and the family emigrated in 1897. The last child was born in 1894. So, the father was still alive in 1894 and very likely in 1897. I would seek his death record in Northbridge, MA between 1897-1900. The names are very plausable - Joseph probably is the baptismal name for Philip, Clara may be the middle name for Marie Rose.

If I were researching this family I would seek the marriage of Maxime NADEAU (b. abt 1850) and Delia DESROSIERS (b. Jan 1854) in about 1874 in Ste-Aime, Richelieu, QC. I would also look carefully at the next-door neighbors in 1881 as possible grandparents to these children because the ages are right. The marriage record will confirm or refute this:

According to an online tree, Antoine NADEAU m. Genevieve BROUILLARD 17 Oct 1843 at St David, Yamaska, Montérégie, Quebec, which is not far from Ste-Aime. That could easily be the birth location for Maxime.

There are 103 people named DESROSIERS in that town in 1881 so a guess isn't possible.

Maxime NADEAU (Antoine & Genev. BROUILLARD)

Marriage: 4 aug. 1874 St-Aimé, QC

Le-Bas-Richelieu is the name of the region and has nothing to do with the name of the church. Re-read my message and you will see that the name of the parish is simply St-Aime. St-Aime parish was in a small village called Masseuville in the early 1800s but the name of the village was changed to St-Aime.

Vf means widow/widower. 2nd means second marriage. So, Jean NADEAU was first married to Marie CARTIER and then, after she died, he married Rosanna BLAIN. If there were any children with Marie then Rosanna became their step-mother.

In that same post Norm says he did not find the first marriage of Jean Nadeau and Marie Cartier. We can presume it would have been at least 18 years before the 1843 date of his son's marriage, or at least by 1825. We can also presume that Marie dies before July 1842 when Jean, now a widower, remarried.

Re: Which one married Marie Cartier?

--------------------------------------

I'm guessing neither. The Jean-Baptiste Nadeau who married on Nov 14, 1814 is the widower of Genevieve Leblanc. The only Nadeau/Leblanc marriage I can find in the region is at Sorel on Sept 16, 1811. That marriage is between Jean-Baptiste Nadeau (son of Jean-Baptiste Nadeau and Genevieve Corbin) and Marie Leblanc (daughter of Joseph Leblanc and Genevieve Leblanc). I'm guessing that Marie and Genevieve are the same person. There are only two Genevieve Leblancs in the area and the other one is accounted for.

Looking for information and relatives of Aime' Nadeau born 7/5/1826 whose father was David... mother was a Daigle (Theotiste? - can't read transcription). Aime' married Flavie Cyr born 1828/29. Her father was Benoni and her mother was Anastasie Lizotte. Aime' and Flavie both lived in St. Basile at the time of their marriage 16/9/45. They had to have double consent, which I'm told means they were related. Their known children were Sophie b. 28/11/1847 in St. Basile who married Cyprien Bonenfent (sp?) on 24/7/1868 in St. Basile; Euphemie b. 30/10/1848 in St. Basile; Flavie born 27/6/54 in St. Basile; Aime' born 23/10/1850 in St. Basile; Lea born 25/4/1857 in St. Basile; and Docite' born 7/10/1856 in St. Basile. The reason I am interested is Aime' and Flavie are listed as grandparents of Joseph Nadeau in the St. Louis Parish cemetery records in Fort Kent, Maine. Aime' died a few months after his grandson in 1894 at age 70, which discounts his above listed date of birth, but of course the age may have been guesstimated at time of death. What I really want to know is: who is the parent of Joseph? Is it one of the listed children? Death record for Joseph lists Michel Long and Amedee Nadeau (who was known as Ruth) as parents. (Amedee I'm told is French for Marie.) Ruth was my great-great grandparent. Joseph was brother to my great-grandmother Edith Long. Any help would be appreciated.

Looking for information on the marriage and family of Antoine Nadeau and Dometelle Lacasse. The only information that I have is that they had a son, Alcide, born in Waterbury, CT on July 31, 1896. He married Clara Guillemette, had a large family and died in Springvale, ME on January 16, 1959. Alcide's marriage to Clara has never been found. I don't know if Antoine and Dometelle were married in Canada or in the U.S., but when Alcide died in 1959, many relatives came down from Canada for his funeral and did not speak English. Any help to connect the family will be greatly appreciated.

DeAnn Webster Nee Proteau

My name is DeAnn Webster Nee Proteau. My mothers maiden name is Nadeau. She said her fathers name was Ernest Nadeau. She thinks he was born in Winterville, Maine he married a Rosina Cartier and they had eight childern their names were as follows. I put them in order of age Edward, :Lorraine , Donald, Joseph Arlene Christine, Gearldine , Sylvia

On a different site I think I found my great grandparents the names were Honore Nadeau he married Modeste Soucy. They had ten childern. My mother thinks it is the right one. She said that our family came from France. I was wondering if any one knows of this line. My e-mail address is lynnwebb@telus.net It would be good to hear from some one to verify if I have this connection right. Thank you.

Jill DeLong

On your website, you have an entry by Pat Nadeau referencing David Nadeau's family. I am descended from that line. We always thought we had Indian in us because my mother's grandmother looked like an Indian Squaw and everyone always commented on it (probably behind her back as the children picked right up on all that heresay). She had long hair that she wore in a braid and it puddled around her feet. She was very short, but still that's over five feet of hair! Her family included: Edith, Georgie (Georgianna) & Joseph who were children of Michel Long and Medee "Ruth" Nadeau. Ruth was daughter to Aime and Flavie (Cyr) Nadeau. We have proof of this through Joseph's Maine Death Record and the Fort Kent Catholic Church Records which states that Joseph was buried, and he was the grandson of Aime & Flavie Nadeau. Aime died a few months later. The church is located across the street from the cemetery, and adjacent to the Daigle-Nadeau Monument Company. -Jill DeLong

Denis Nadeau III (by Richared Nadeau)

The following Denis Nadeau is not listed in Sister Rachael (Cecile) or the Marist Brother's geneology books.

Dick Garneau, historian par excellance, was kind enough to point me in the right direction with the link at http://www.members.shaw.ca/rominator/Surnames.htm for those of you who wish to pursue this Metis, indian--'Voyageur' or 'Coureur de bois' Nadeau connection

Denis Nadeau III is a great grandson of Joseph-Osanny. He was a 'coureur-de-bois' or 'voyageur' as they were called. Denis Nadeau b-1747 Canada married Madeleine Indian b-1775 most likely North West. The line goes like this:

Ossany  (of the union with Marguarite Abraham) begat Denis sr. and other children.

Denis sr. begat (of the union with Elizabeth Roy), Denis jr. (b. April 6, 1731 at Beaumont, Quebec)

Denis jr. begat (of the union with Marie Elizabetrh Gosselin--daughter of Elizabeth Lacasse and Pierre Joseph Gosselin), Denis III  (b. Oct. 19, 1754)

Denis III  (of the union with first wife, Madeleine "Nadeau" Indian) begat 2 children--Margueritte or Marie Anne and Joseph Nadeau sr.

Joseph Nadeau sr. was Metis indian b. 1807 and married, in 1813, to Suzanne Bourdon and begat 2 children--Joseph Nadeau jr. and Pierre dit La Corde.

Joseph Nadeau jr. married Margueritte Montreille, also Metis indian, and begat Joseph Setame Nadeau (b. 1861 d. 1950).

Joseph Setame m. Susan Piihtigiisgusigour dit Le Rat (Indian) and begat 11 children--Norbert M, Mary Rachel, Virginia, Peter, Judith, Florestine, Ambrose,                                                                              Margaret,  Alvina, Patrick, Ernest

Pierre dit La Corde b. 1833 in Manitoba, d. in Alberta, m. Josephte Cardinal, Metis indian, begat Alexis, Clarisse, Jeseph , Marie, Dieudonne

Denis III (of the union with second wife, Madeleine Doze) begat Margueritte

From the union of Denis sr. with Elizabeth Roy a very large line of Nadeau half and full blood indian line has continued to flourish to he present day. Most are in the Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and other Western states and provinces.

Hi My Name is Kristen; I came across your web site through roots web.com. I found it to be very interesting and amazing. I was wondering if you could help me ? My great-grandmother was Vitaline Vachon; Her mother's name was Rosalie Nadeau married to Joseph Vachon, I beleive she had a sister named Celina Nadeau married to Damase Vachon, Celina Nadeau died in St-Leon Standon le 24 Nov,1923. I beleive that Rosalie and Celina's parents were Damase Nadeau and Ester Letourneau. I was told that Damase Nadeau was the son of Charles Nadeau and Theotiste Blanchet, Charles Nadeau was the son of Francois Etrinne Nadeau and Marie Genevieve Martineau. Other what I have been told and a Obituary card of Celina Nadeau I have no other Information on this family or my great-great grandmother Rosalie. Every search has turned out to be a dead end. I was at the Acadian Archives in Fort Kent today and found a record for Docite' born July 10, 1856, father was Aime' Nadeau who married Flavie Cyr, who were related to each other as they had to have double consent. They married in St. Basil September 16, 1845. Aime' was born 7/5/26 and Flavie was born in 1828/29. Her parents were Benoni Cyr and Anamarie Lizotte. Aime's parents were David Nadeau and I couldn't read his wife's name, but it was H... Daigle.

Aime' and Flavie Nadeau's listed children were Sophie, Eupheme, Aime' Lea, Flavie, and Docite'.

Dear Richard:

We are 7th cousins 1 time removed by my estimate. I am also a decendant of Jean Baptiste Nadeau , but on my mothers side! My fathers side is very vague because his grandfather left home when my grandfather was only 7 and was never heard from again. His name was Leon or Napoleon Nadeau and his father was Jean. He settled in Central Falls R.I. and was born in 1871. That is all we know except his mother's name was Marie. I hope you may be able to shed some light on him to see which line he came from . As for my mother's side the lineage is as follows :Gary , son of Joyce Despathy, daughter of Wilfred Despathy, son of George Despathy , Son of Anaise Nadeau ,daughter of Adolphe Nadeau , son of Antoine Nadeau , son of louis Nadeau , son of Louis Nadeau . son of Antoine Nadeau , son of Jean Baptiste Nadeau , son of Ozanie Joseph Nadeau. As you can see i am a Nadeau on both sides of my family and I am very interested to find out if my father and mother have similar backgrounds, so i hope you may have some information , i look forward to future correspondence and i am very happy that you answered my e-mail

My Ernest's father was Aguste Joseph (Peter) Nedeau (b. 1880), and his mother was Marie Emma Marjorie (Emma) LaFlamme Nedeau (b. 1881). The parents were from Arthabaska area in Quebec, and moved to Kennebunk ME, and eventually to finish their lives in Manchester NH., and Grandpa Ernest was born in Meredith NH. Please email me with any response. I won't find my way back here.

Erharh Nedeau was divorced from my mother Lois Werelus in 1976. I have never met him or any of my family on that side and would like any info anyone has. I am from Seattle,WA and my mother met my father here in the mid 70's. PLease help if you can, if not thank you for checking.
